{"id":3982,"date":"2024-12-16T14:48:49","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T12:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/geopark.serverhub.gr\/item\/holy-monastery-of-saint-stephanos\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T10:10:33","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T07:10:33","slug":"holy-monastery-of-saint-stephanos","status":"publish","type":"citadela-item","link":"https:\/\/www.meteorapyligeopark.gr\/en\/item\/holy-monastery-of-saint-stephanos\/","title":{"rendered":"Monastery of Saint Stephen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Monastery of St. Stephanos is located at the southeastern end of the cluster of meteoric rocks, just above Kalambaka, and it is the only monastery that can be visited without climbing stairs, because access to it is by a small bridge.<\/p>\n<p>The view from the patio of the monastery is magnificent. At the feet of the rock lies the city of Kalambaka, with the Pinios River further in the background. <\/p>\n<p>The first testimonies date its foundation to the end of the 12th century, around 1191-1192. The construction of the monastery began in the 14th century, with the first founder being Anthony Kantakouzenos and Meteorite, and was completed in the 16th century. The monastery appears to have been completely renovated in the 16th century.  <\/p>\n<p>Since 1961 it has been operating as a female monastery with a large and active brotherhood, which, along with its rich spiritual and charitable work, has also a remarkable renovating and building work in the monastery.<\/p>\n\r\n        <div \r\n            class=\"wp-block-citadela-blocks ctdl-item-gallery
