Geoethics<\/strong>, which addresses the ethical, social, and cultural dimensions of geoscientific activities, is essential for fostering responsible human engagement with the Earth,
particularly within frameworks such as UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGps)<\/strong>. UGGps
play a critical role in safeguarding geological heritage<\/strong> and advancing sustainable regional
development.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This study introduces the Geoethical Awareness Scale (GAS)<\/strong>, a 32-item instrument developed across 16 thematic axes<\/strong>, designed to assess geoethical awareness. We analyzed responses from n = 798 residents<\/strong> across nine Hellenic UGGps<\/strong> using Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses, retaining items with factor loadings of \u00b10.30 or higher. <\/p>\n

Six factors emerged:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Geological heritage conservation and sustainable georesource use<\/li>\n
  2. Community engagement and collaborative governance<\/li>\n
  3. Sustainability through geoenvironmental education<\/li>\n
  4. Environmental challenges and risk adaptation<\/li>\n
  5. Sustainable geotourism<\/li>\n
  6. Climate awareness and ecosystem resilience<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Collectively, these factors explained 60.12% of the variance<\/strong>, with Cronbach\u2019s alpha values<\/strong> demonstrating acceptable to excellent reliability.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Structural Equation Modeling confirmed the scale\u2019s validity, with fit indices indicating acceptable model adequacy<\/strong>. Incremental indices suggested moderate alignment<\/strong>, while parsimony-adjusted metrics supported a balance between model complexity and fit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Overall, the GAS demonstrated generalizability and sufficient sample robustness<\/strong>. Correlation <\/strong>analyses highlighted the role of geoeducation<\/strong>, organizational involvement<\/strong>, and direct experience<\/strong> in fostering pro-geoconservation attitudes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    While perceptions of sustainable development and ecosystem resilience<\/strong> varied geographically<\/strong> across UGGps, community engagement and governance<\/strong> remained consistent<\/strong>, likely reflecting standardized policy frameworks.<\/p>\n

    GAS <\/strong>offers a valuable tool for assessing geoethical awareness <\/strong>and underscores the importance of targeted geoeducation<\/strong> and participatory governance<\/strong> in promoting ethical geoscientific practices<\/strong> within UGGps and similar socioecological systems.<\/p>\n
