Church of the Virgin Mary by Pikionis
At the entrance of Pertouli is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The church was built in the mid-20th century to a design by Dimitris Pikionis. Dimitris Pikionis (1887-1968) was one of the greatest Greek figures in Architecture and the arts with a rich architectural, painting, poetic and academic work. He was a professor at the National Technical University of Athens and a member of the Academy of Athens. Among his most famous works are the landscaping of the area around the Acropolis and Filopappoy Hill, the fortress of Fortezza in Rethymno, the Xenia of Delphi and many others. The church was designed by Pikionis at the same time as his design of the Forest Village of Pertouli in the 1950s. It presents a unique design, combining traditional Byzantine and Orthodox architecture with elements of modern design and adaptation to the mountains character.
