Students in Action to Protect the Portaikos Valley

As part of its activities for World Cleanup Day, the Meteora–Pyli Geopark is organising an awareness-raising, educational and symbolic clean-up activity in Pyli on Monday, 21 September 2026, in cooperation with the Municipality of Pyli and the Directorate of Primary Education of Trikala.

The activity will involve pupils from the 5th and 6th grades of Pyli Primary School, who will visit the riverside area near the stone bridge of Agios Vissarion, in the Portaikos Valley.

There, representatives of the Geopark will introduce the pupils to the value of geosites, the importance of protecting the natural environment, and the need to keep natural and cultural monuments clean and protected.

The educational activity will be combined with a symbolic voluntary clean-up of the riverside area, giving the pupils the opportunity to participate actively and to understand in practice the importance of personal responsibility, cooperation and care for their local environment.

Through this activity, the Geopark aims to inform and raise awareness among the younger generation about the protection of geosites and the environment, fostering from an early age a relationship based on knowledge, respect and active participation.

The event in Pyli is the second of two activities through which the Meteora–Pyli Geopark is marking World Cleanup Day this year. One day earlier, in Kalabaka, the “Adopt a Geosite” initiative will be presented to the cultural and dance associations of the Municipality of Meteora.
