Joint Event of the Three UNESCO Global Geoparks in Mainland Greece, Held in Konitsa, Ioannina
The cultural heritage of the Meteora–Pyli Geopark was presented yesterday in Konitsa, Ioannina, during a joint event organized by the three UNESCO Global Geoparks of mainland Greece: Meteora–Pyli, Vikos–Aoos, and Grevena–Kozani.
The event took place within the framework of the 4th Summer School organized in Konitsa by the Vikos–Aoos Geopark. During the joint session, each Geopark presented the cultural heritage and assets of their respective regions, all of which have been recognized by UNESCO and included in the Global Geopark Network.
Representing the Meteora–Pyli Geopark, the Deputy Mayor of Tourism of Meteora Municipality, Mr. Fotis Karathanasis showcased the emblematic historical and geological sites of the area and the rich culture that has developed around them. Additionally, the Technical Advisor of the Region of Thessaly, Mr. G. Giannakopoulos, highlighted the timeless relationship between the rare geosites of the Geopark and their influence on the cultural footprint of the region from antiquity to the present day.
Similar presentations were given by the representatives of the Vikos–Aoos and Grevena–Kozani Global Geoparks. The event concluded with a guided tour of the old town of Konitsa for all participants.
