ARTE Documentary at the Meteora–Pyli Geopark “Sacred Geology – Between Earth and Sky: Meteora”

These days, the Franco-German television channel ARTE is filming at the Meteora–Pyli Geopark for a documentary titled “Sacred Geology: Meteora–Pyli Geopark”. Through narratives based on the themes Earth – Life – Testimony, the documentary seeks the “breath” of the landscape – from the birth of the rocks and the mysteries of geological creation, to the ascetic life of the monks and the modern challenges the landscape faces due to tourism and climate change. It is a journey between earth and sky, where stone becomes a vessel of faith, memory, and light.

At the heart of the documentary is the Meteora–Pyli Geopark, recognized by UNESCO as a Global Geopark – a place where nature and human presence have been intertwined for millions of years into a single narrative. From the Theopetra Cave – one of the oldest known sites of human presence in Europe – to the ancient monasteries of Meteora and Pyli, which have stood for centuries, the ARTE camera captures the profound relationship between geology, spirituality, and culture. Through the voices of scientists, monks, and local residents, the documentary highlights the living testimony of a land where hidden villages, gorges, rocks, culture, and religion coexist in a continuous dialogue.

The documentary is being filmed in collaboration with the Municipalities of Meteora and Pyli, the Region of Thessaly, the Ministry of Culture, and the Holy Metropolis of Trikki, Gardiki, and Pyli.
