The proceedings of the 6th Conference of the UNESCO Global Geoparks of Greece and Cyprus, hosted in Anogia at the Psiloritis Geopark, concluded on Saturday, June 13, 2026, with great success and strong participation. The conference, themed “The Role of Geotourism and Other Forms of Alternative Tourism in the Sustainable Development of Inland and Mountain Communities,” was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and the National Commissions for UNESCO of Greece and Cyprus. The conference was co-organized. The conference was co-organized by the Psiloritis Geopark—the “Ida Network” of Psiloritis Municipalities, the Municipality of Anogeia, the Natural History Museum of Crete at the University of Crete, and the UNESCO Chair at the University of the Aegean.
The event was attended by numerous representatives from the ten Greek Geoparks and the Cyprus Geopark, as well as a host of other organizations from both countries and residents of the Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark region. Representatives from the Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT), the Green Fund, the Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Climate Change (OFYPEKA), and the two National Commissions for UNESCO actively participated in all aspects of the conference.
The Meteora-Pili Geopark participated with two presentations. The mayor of Meteora, Eleftherios Avramopoulos, presented the topic “Geotourism as a means of increasing the length of stay and distribution of visitors in the inland region: The case of the Meteora-Pili Geopark,” and the technical advisor, Nikolaos Pitsoulis, presented the topic “The impact of geology on the development of cultural heritage: The case of the Meteora-Pili Geopark.”
