“Fossil of the Year 2027” Contest: What is your favorite fossil?

“Fossil of the Year 2027” Contest: What is your favorite fossil?

A unique competition for residents of the Meteora–Pyli Geopark, in celebration of International Geodiversity Day!

To mark International Geodiversity Day, celebrated annually on October 6, the UNESCO Meteora–Pili Global Geopark invites local residents to participate in the “EGN Fossil of the Year 2027” art contest.

The competition is organized at the initiative of the European Geoparks Network (EGN) and is open to residents of UNESCO European Global Geoparks.

What You Need to Do

Choose a fossil from the Meteora–Pyli Geopark area and depict it in your own way: through painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, digital art, or any other art form. There is no “right” way. What matters is your own perspective.

Who Can Participate

All residents of the Geopark area, regardless of age. Students may participate with individual or group projects.

The award

The winner will receive a collection of rocks and fossils. Their entry will represent the Meteora–Pili Geopark in the European “EGN Fossil of the Year 2027” competition, alongside the winning entries from the other European Geoparks. These entries will be put to a vote by EGN members, and in May 2027, the European “Fossil of the Year” will be announced; its creator will receive a gift from the EGN.

Need some inspiration?

Visit the Museum of Geological Formations in Kastraki, near Kalambaka. There, you’ll see local rocks and fossils up close and discover what they “tell us” about the area’s distant past.

How to Register

Please submit your entry to info@meteorapyligeopark.gr from October 6 through December 31, 2026.

Geodiversity is all around us—in rocks, minerals, fossils, soils, and landscapes.

It offers a glimpse into the history of the Earth and reminds us how important it is to protect our geological heritage.

Choose your favorite fossil, get inspired, create, and showcase your place!
