The Antichasia Mountains and Meteora protected area occupies the largest part of the Antichasia Mountains, which are located in the northeastern part of the Prefecture of Trikala. It is a hilly and semi-mountainous area, with altitudes of up to 1,500m. and is crossed by small mountain rivers, the most important of which are the Mourganis and the Litheos, tributaries of the Pinios River. The western part of the area includes the rocks of Meteora, north of Kalambaka with similar appearances in the area of Gavros and Agios Dimitrios. The protected area constitutes a mosaic of dierent types of vegetation with a common denominator of their sub-Mediterranean character. The largest part (lower) of the area is covered by the para-Mediterranean vegetation zone (Quercetalia pybescentis) and only a small part at the highest points is covered by the beech zone (Fagetalia). The dominant forest species is the broad-leaved oak (Q. frainetto). Two endemic ora species occur in the area: Centaurea Kalabakensis and Centaura lactiflora (knapweed). The area is important for birdlife because 46 species and subspecies of birds have been recorded in it. The habitat hosts one of the last 4 colonies of the Kite (Milvus migrans) remaining in the entire country, while the area is also the most important in Greece for the Asproparis / Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus).
