The Water Treasures of the Municipality of Meteora – The Natural Advantage of the Geopark

The Municipality of Meteora, located in the heart of the Southern Pindos mountains, hides a rare natural wealth where steep gorges meet lush forests and historic villages: its lakes.

In a landscape dominated by rock, forest, and water, these lakes serve as aquatic oases, enriching biodiversity, enhancing the area’s ecotourism identity, and forming a key component of the Meteora–Pyli UNESCO Global Geopark.

Logga Lake – The Largest in the Municipality

The most expansive lake in the region, with a calm surface and rich natural surroundings. Located southwest, at a lower altitude of Southern Pindos, it attracts photographers, nature lovers, and researchers for species observation.

Skepári Lake – A Breath of Tranquility

Hidden among the forests and pastures of the village of Skepári, this lake is ideal for those seeking seclusion and a connection with the wild nature of the Pindos range.

Gavros Lake – Water Among the “Little Meteora”

Gavros Lake lies in a unique location among wooded areas and beneath the spectacular rocks of the so-called “Little Meteora.” With rare scenic beauty, it has become a landmark along the new hiking trails in the region, attracting walkers, nature lovers, and photographers. It combines the serenity of water with the grandeur of rock formations, making it one of the most charming small stops within the Geopark.

Asprokklisiá Lake – A Landscape of Stone and Water

The village of Asprokklisiá in the Chasia Mountains hosts a peaceful lake harmoniously integrated into the natural surroundings of Southern Pindos. Here, nature and tradition meet in perfect balance.

Agiofyllo Lake – Lesser-Known but Authentic

Located on the edge of agricultural lands, it blends into the rural scenery of Thessaly’s countryside. Though far from tourist routes, it retains authenticity and natural significance.

Mayor Lefteris Avramopoulos, in a statement to the Athens–Macedonian News Agency, emphasized:

“The lakes of our municipality, subtle yet precious treasures of the Meteora region, showcase our rich natural and geological heritage.

Within the framework of the Meteora–Pyli UNESCO Global Geopark, we are enhancing their promotion and protection with the goal of fostering sustainable tourism that respects nature and strengthens local development. We invite visitors to explore these unique corners of our land, walk the new trails, and enjoy authentic experiences in the heart of Pindos.”

These lakes are not only landscapes of natural beauty but also a strategic advantage of the Meteora–Pyli Geopark, enriching the local ecosystem. They are valuable milestones on a journey that combines geology, history, tradition, and sustainable development.

The Municipality of Meteora is not just rocks and monasteries. It is also water, nature, trails, and genuine experiences in a region that respects the environment and invests in mild tourism.”
