Near the mountainous village of Chaliki in the Aspropotamos region stands the Monastery of Prophet Elias and the Transfiguration of Christ. According to local priest Christos Barbalis, the monastery was established in the mid-19th century by three shepherd brothers from Chaliki—Damianos, Hilarion, and Afxentios Mavrogeorgos.
By Royal Decree dated July 8, 1886, the Monastery of Prophet Elias in Chaliki was officially incorporated as a dependency of the Holy Monastery of the Holy Cross in Doliana. Although the monastery complex is currently dismantled, its two churches remain in good condition.
The Church of Prophet Elias is a small, single-aisled stone basilica with a domed roof, ending in a semicircular apse on the eastern side. According to the scholar Alexandros Hatzigakis, the church may have already existed by 1750.
The newer Church of the Transfiguration of Christ dates back to 1783. It was rebuilt in 1868 and renovated in 1963. This elegant stone structure features a cross-in-square single-aisled basilica design with a dome and two Athonite-style choirs. Its eastern side ends in a heptagonal apse, and the roof consists of a semi-cylindrical chamber. The floor is paved with stone slabs.
