The area of Metsovo (Anilio-Katara) is the natural border between the North and South Pindos mountain ranges and also the main pass from Epirus to Thessaly. The protected area includes two summits Voulgaris (1821 m) and Thanasakis (1820 m) of Mt. Zygos (north-east of Metsovo) and part of the drainage basin of the Aoos River (at an average of 1300 m). Geologically, most of the area is covered by Flysch sediments (clay schists, sandstones, conglomerates, limestones) and ophiolitic complexes of mac and ultra-mac volcanic rocks (Pindos Ophiolite Complex). The dense vegetation consists mainly of fir and pine forests, beech and alpine meadows. Brown bears of Pindos frequent this area. Winter sports activities are supported by the Metsovo and Anilio Ski Centers. Carpentry (mainly furniture) and woodcarving have been two of the main occupations of the residents of the area for centuries, along with livestock farming.
