BioBlitz Activity at the “Little Meteora” of Gavros – Connecting Schools of Pyli and Lesvos
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Mountain Guides from SAEK Trikala are organizing a hands-on BioBlitz environmental education activity in the area of Gavros, Kalampaka, within the Meteora–Pyli Geopark.
The activity has a dual purpose: To record the region’s biodiversity through field observation and identification of plants, animals, and other organisms. To raise awareness of environmental protection through participatory outdoor activities
Visitor safety is a top priority, and all trails selected for the activity have been pre-inspected and chosen based on their interest for hiking and nature tourism.
This initiative is part of the broader framework of environmental education and protection, showcasing the geological, ecological, and cultural value of the Geopark and promoting ecological awareness and engagement through active and meaningful experiences in nature.
The activity will take place at 6:00 p.m. on June 5 (World Environment Day), starting from the main square of the local community of Gavros. Participants are invited to bring their mobile phones, which will be used via a dedicated app to help identify and record local flora and fauna.
School-to-School Connection Across the Geopark Network
On the same day, the Primary School and Kindergarten of Stournaraika will participate in the education initiative “Message from My Geopark,” which fosters communication between school classes in UNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece. The project encourages creative exchange using reused paper or other materials as a medium. Students from Pyli will connect with peers from schools in Lesvos, while similar initiatives are expected from other schools in the region. This action is part of a broader initiative by the Education Committee of the UNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece, launched in celebration of World Environment Day.
