The Geopark “Celebrated” World Environment Day

Plant Identification Activity by Mountain Guides & School Connection between Stournaraika and Lesvos

To mark World Environment Day, mountain guides, educators, and hikers explored the trails of the unique Gavros geosite in the Meteora–Pyli Geopark, engaging in a plant and animal identification activity using the iNaturalist app.

Equipped with mobile phones and the app, volunteers photographed and uploaded plant species observed along the “Little Meteora” trail network, contributing to a biodiversity database that helps identify and document the flora and fauna of the Geopark and its geosites. The BioBlitz action, organized in the afternoon by the Geopark, was dedicated to environmental awareness, but the volunteers involved are also daily nature explorers of the region.

Connecting Schools Across Geoparks

That same morning, the Primary School and Kindergarten of Stournaraika, in the Municipality of Pyli, participated in World Environment Day activities with an informative event at their school, followed by a virtual exchange with a school in Lesvos—home to Greece’s first UNESCO Global Geopark.

The students and their teachers responded to the call of the Education Committee of the Greek UNESCO Global Geoparks, which coordinated similar events throughout the country to mark the occasion.
