Information, environmental awareness, and active participation in observance of World Cleanup Day
An information and symbolic cleanup event took place with great success today, Monday, September 21, 2026, in Pyli; organized by the Meteora-Pyli Geopark in collaboration with the Municipality of Pyli and the Trikala Primary Education Directorate, the event featured the active participation of 5th and 6th-grade students from the Pyli Primary School.
The event took place in the area along the banks of the stone bridge of Agios Vissarion, in the Portaikos Valley—a geosite of the Geopark—to mark World Cleanup Day (September 20).
The students participated with great enthusiasm in the symbolic cleanup effort, actively contributing to the care of the natural environment and sending their own message for a clean and protected environment.
At the same time, they had the opportunity to learn about World Cleanup Day, gain a better understanding of the Meteora–Pili Geopark, and discover what geosites are and why protecting them is important. Particular emphasis was placed on the relationship between the natural and geological environment and cultural heritage, as well as on the role each of us can play in their conservation and protection.
Through their hands-on participation, the children were able to realize that protecting the environment is not just the responsibility of the relevant authorities, but is also linked to personal responsibility, cooperation, and actively caring for our local community.
At the end of the activity, as a small memento of their participation, the students each received a small gift from the Geopark: a headlamp, so they could become the Geopark’s little explorers.
Today’s event highlighted in the best possible way the importance of environmental education and the active participation of the younger generation. For the Meteora–Pili Geopark, introducing children to the geosites and the unique values of their region is an important step toward fostering a new generation that understands, respects, and protects its natural and geological heritage.
