The Municipality of Meteora welcomed an international team of 30 geoscientists from various countries as part of the international conference “Near Surface Geophysics ’26,” organized in Thessaloniki by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE).
The group, accompanied by Alexandros Hatzipetros, Vice Chair of the Department of Geology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, was welcomed by Fotis Karathanasis, Deputy Mayor for Tourism.
Sotiris Valkaniotis, a research associate at the Meteora–Pili Geopark and a geologist, presented to the scientists the Geopark’s 21 geosites, the unique geological heritage of our region, and the opportunities they offer for scientific research, education, and geotourism.
The visit included a guided tour of the Museum of Geological Formations in Kastraki, followed by a visit to Meteora, where the participants were able to experience firsthand the region’s unique natural and geological landscape.
The presence of 30 scientists from the international geoscience community in our region enhances the visibility of the Meteora–Pyla Geopark and highlights our municipality’s unique geological heritage on an international level.
