The two-day event dedicated to the protection and promotion of the Meteora–Pyli Geopark has come to a successful conclusion

A two-day event organized by the Municipality of Meteora on September 4 and 5, 2026, to protect, enhance, and promote the Geopark Meteora–Pyli, a UNESCO Global Geopark, as part of the “Outreach Actions 2026” program, co-funded by the Green Fund.

The first day, at Theopetra Park, combined environmental awareness with culture. Children and families participated in a creative workshop using recyclable materials, while a photography exhibition dedicated to the people of the Geopark and their relationship with stone, the landscape, and the region was also on display. The evening culminated with the concert “The Culture of Stone” by Loudovikos of Anogia, which used music to highlight the special bond between people, nature, and cultural heritage.

On Saturday, September 5, the event moved to the trails and geosites of the Geopark. Two guided geotours were held—one at the Rocks of Meteora and the other at the Geomorphs of Gavros (Little Meteora)—led by expert mountain guides, who provided commentary on the geological history of the landscape. Participants in the trail hikes had the opportunity to learn about Geosites, the importance of protecting them, and how to interact responsibly with the environment.

The two-day event highlighted the Geopark not only as a site of exceptional geological and natural value, but also as a vibrant space for participation, education, and culture, where residents and visitors can learn about its heritage while actively contributing to its preservation and protection. After all, this was the fundamental focus of the activities: to link familiarity with the geosites to their practical care. Protecting the Geopark is everyone’s responsibility—and the two-day event on September 4 and 5 demonstrated that culture, knowledge, and active participation can come together in a meaningful way in the same place.
