June 8–9, 1943 – In the two-day Battle of Porta, 150 ELAS fighters and 80–100 reserve ELAS members, despite being poorly equipped, managed to hold back 4,500 Italian troops—supported by artillery, air force, cavalry, and infantry—at the mountain pass of Porta. This battle marked the first organized act of resistance against the occupying forces. The plan was drawn up by officers who, just a few years earlier, had contributed to the legendary Albanian campaign of 1940. Just three months later, on September 11, 1943, in the very same location, history would once again be written.
The battle of Porta closed the door for the conquerors to climb the mountain and conquer it. But the Battle of Porta opened the door to Leftheria.
The commemoration of the historic Battle of Porta takes place every year on the first weekend of June, in the central square of Pyli, next to the Town Hall.
