In a decree issued by the Byzantine Emperor Andronikos III Palaiologos in 1336, the Holy Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary of Gardiki is listed as belonging to the diocese of Stagon. From Byzantine archives and oral descriptions, it is believed that the monastery flourished even before the 13th century. Much later, in 1830, the monastery (old monastery) was rebuilt in its current location by the hieromonk Damaskinos and his brother Charalambos. It was decorated in 1842, the last renovation of the monastery took place in 1892 and it was abandoned in 1964. Today the Monastery has been repaired and celebrates on August 23.
