The railway line that would connect Kalambaka with Kozani began to be designed and built in 1920. With a 1928 contract between the Hellenic State and the “Belgian Commercial Company”, the construction of the line from Kalambaka to Veria, via Grevena, Siatista, and Kozani, with a total length of 197 km, began. The works began with the support of the Thessaly Railways, and proceeded until 1932, when they were interrupted due to the suspension of the servicing of the Hellenic State’s loans. By the time the works were stopped, 67% of construction on the Kalambaka – Kozani line had been completed. During World War II, the existing line was looted by the German occupation forces. Today, abandoned station buildings, tunnels, unfinished bridges and earthworks remain at various points along the route. Several of these points are accessible via local roads or by following paths in the hills north of Kalambaka.
