Kalambaka hosted an international visit as part of the European SustainTour project, with the participation of universities, educational organizations, and institutions from Greece and the wider Balkan region.
The Meteora Municipality area was selected as the study site due to the particular interest presented by the UNESCO-recognized Meteora–Pili Geopark, as an optimal example of the integration of natural and cultural heritage with sustainable tourism development.
Participants gained firsthand insight into how the Geopark contributes to highlighting local identity, creating authentic experiences, strengthening the local economy, and generating added value for the region.
The visit highlighted the growing interest in the local development model, which is based on the protection and utilization of the region’s unique natural and cultural resources, local cooperation, and the promotion of responsible forms of tourism.
The goal of the initiative was to exchange experiences and best practices for human resource development in the field of sustainable tourism, reaffirming the role of the Meteora–Pili Geopark as a benchmark for modern and sustainable approaches to tourism development.
