Crossing Pindos Ι
Pyli – Pertouli – Athamania
This stunning scenic route offers visitors the opportunity to traverse and observe the impressive geological formations that make up the Koziakas Unit and the Pindos Geotectonic Zone. Starting from Pyli and heading towards Elati, the route follows the western slope of Mount Koziakas, crossing through its characteristic formations. The path then ascends to the plateau of the Pertouli Meadows, continuing through the geological structures of the Pindos Zone. Along the way, travelers encounter historic and picturesque chapels, including Agia Kyriaki in Pertouli, Agia Paraskevi outside Neraidochori, and Agios Nikolaos Asfaka, built dramatically at the foot of a steep cliff. The route ends in the villages of Gardiki and Athamania, located at the edge of the road network. From Athamania, a trail leads to the impressive Athamania Gorge (Steno), which is only accessible during the summer months. West of Gardiki, a network of mountain hiking trails leads up to the peaks of Kakarditsa, a majestic alpine area shaped by glacial valleys and deposits, forming the natural boundary between Epirus and Thessaly.
